Duncan Cenotaph – Charles Hoey Park
As part of our effort to document the names on the Duncan Cenotaph in Charles Hoey Park, here is what we know about Private Edgar Norton Ford, who was killed in action 24 April 2015, aged 18, at Ypres. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
Here is the local Cowichan Leader newspaper report of Edgar Norton Ford’s death:
“Private Edgar Norton Ford, missing 7th Battalion, was born and brought up here, his father, Mr. Walter Ford, owing the Pemberton farm until a few years ago when he removed to Coombs, V.I. [note: Vancouver Island], and engaged in the lumber business in which his son assisted him. Private Ford is a brother of Mrs. J.C. Gidley, Duncan, and a nephew of Mr. David Ford, postmaster, Duncan. He enlisted last August [1914] in the 88th Fusiliers.”
