The Kwagu’l Bear Holding A Seal was carved in 1987 by Richard Hunt. It depicts three figures: the Frog, the Kwagu’l Bear and the Seal. It stands 3.6m (11’9″) in height and is displayed in Charles Hoey Park, on Canada Avenue, near the Station Street intersection and the E&N Railway Station.
Carver Richard Hunt describes the meaning of Kwagu’l Bear Holding A Seal as:
“The Frog on top of the pole represents the Frog Dance…The Kwagu’l Bear represents the dance of the Animal Kingdom from the forest and also the Hamatsa (a high ranking dance in Kwagu’l culture). The Seal is also part of the same {Hamatsa] dance.”
